The Gamut Viewer is an Ergosoft RIP Tool that lets you view and compare different printer gamuts by visualizing them. You can view and compare gamuts directly from an ICC file, or from Print Environments in the installation. To access the Gamut Viewer, go to Tools > Color & Special Features > Gamut Viewer.
You’ll be able to select from 2 different Gamut Viewer Tools:
- Visualize Gamut in 2D Slices
- Visualize Gamut in 3D
Visualize Gamut in 2D Slices
Once open, you’ll notice two identical sections “Compare ICC Profile 1” and “With ICC Profile 2”.
To begin Viewing/Comparing two Gamuts, go to the “Compare ICC Profile 1” section and use one of the buttons to select how you want to specify the gamut:
External lets you select from one of the ICC Profiles stored in C:\Users\Public\Documents\EsRip\16\Data\Color\InputCmyk. To use it, click on the External button, then select the ICC profile you want to use from the dropdown menu.
Print Environment lets you select from one of the Print Environments available in this installation. To use this method, click on the Print Environment button, then select the Print Environment with the profile you want to use from the dropdown menu.
Browse lets you select a profile in ICC format from any available location. Click the Browse button to open a File Explorer menu and navigate to the ICC file you want to use.
Once you have selected the profile, a visual representation of the printer gamut will be shown as a cross section in the bottom section. You can use the slider on the left to move “through” the gamut and see different cross sections.
If you would like to impose a separate ICC Profile on top of the first, you can do so by selecting the profile from the section “With ICC Profile 2” with the same methods described above. Once you have selected one, you’ll notice a dashed line in the graph section representing the second comparison gamut.
Visualize Gamut in 3D
The newer 3D Gamut Viewer will display the gamut in a 3D visualization.
Once open, you’ll notice two identical sections “Compare” and “With”.
To begin Viewing/Comparing two Gamuts, go to the “Compare” section and use one of the buttons to select how you want to specify the gamut:
ICC lets you select from one of the ICC Profiles stored in C:\Users\Public\Documents\EsRip\17\Data\Color\InputCmyk. To use it, click on the External button, then select the ICC profile you want to use from the dropdown menu.
ICC Profile lets you select a profile in ICC format from any available location. Click the Browse button to open a File Explorer menu and navigate to the ICC file you want to use.
Print Environment lets you select from one of the Print Environments available in this installation. To use this method, click on the Print Environment button, then select the Print Environment with the profile you want to use from the dropdown menu.
Swatchbook lets you select from one of the Swatchbooks available in this installation. To use this method, click on the Swatchbook button, then select the Swatchbook you want to use from the dropdown menu.
Browse lets you select an image file to display. The gamut viewer will then display the color space of the image. This can be very useful to check if all the colors in an image file are inside a printers profile color space. Note that only raster formats are available at this point.
Visualization lets you select a visualization type for the gamut. This will affect the gamut display in the bottom half of the dialog. The available options are Surface, Wireframe, L-Wireframe, Cube Surface and Cube Wireframe.
Fixed Color lets you select a single color for the gamut display in the bottom half of the dialog.
Transparency controls the transparency of the gamut in the display in the bottom half of the dialog.
Use Preview Table: If this is activated, the Gamut Viewer will use the preview table instead of the gamut table of an ICC profile to generate the 3D gamut display. A customizable dE value can be entered in the numbers field defines the limit at which colors are considered to be out of gamut. If no preview tables are present in an ICC profile, a forward/backward transformation using the corresponding ICC tables is used as a fallback routine. This alternative method to the gamut table is useful if a third-party ICC creator does not generate and write a gamut table (or the quality is too low).
Once you have selected the profile, a visual 3D representation of the printer gamut will be shown. You can rotate the visualization of the gamut in the preview window by clicking and dragging your mouse to turn the view and use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out.
If you would like to impose a separate ICC Profile visualization on top of the first to compare the gamuts, you can do so by selecting the profile from the section “With” with the same methods described above. Once you have selected one, you’ll notice the second gamut is overlayed over the first.
This way, you can compare different profiles to each other as well as compare profile color spaces with image color spaces to check if all colors are inside the printable range. You can also use rotate, zoom, transparency and fixed color to better see differences.
